Supporting Local Animals

Right now, many people are surrendering their animals because they can no longer afford to feed them.  You can help by contacting your local food bank or United Way agency to see if they will take donated pet food.  Many of these groups are now taking pet food along with people food to help families cope in this era of high unemployment.

You can also contact your local shelter or rescue group to see what's on their wish list.  Organize a collection drive, have a yard sale and donate the proceeds or better yet, Volunteer at your local shelter.

PetSavers is always looking for volunteers to help us in our mission to reduce euthanasia and improve the lives of pets.  You can join us at tabling events, community outreach or by volunteering at PetSmart.  For more info contact our volunteer coordinator.

You can also foster, which is particularly rewarding and helpful during kitten season when the shelter has a large kitten and cat population.

Finally, report any suspected abuse or neglect and keep your own companion animals spayed or neutered and indoors.

Maintain a Pet Emergency/First Aid Kit, and be aware of some of the local and national emergency services available.  See our Emergency Info section for lots of helpful information.

ADOPT from a Shelter

Perhaps one of the biggest things you can do is adopt from your local shelter versus buying an animal from a breeder or pet store.  Your local shelter has almost any breed of dog or cat, from puppies and kittens to seniors.   Adopting from a shelter is responsible and rewarding.   There are lots of good reasons for adopting from your local shelter, not the least of which is that the animals there need you the most.
Right now there are many cats of all ages in particular need of good loving homes so please consider adopting a cat from the GCAS.  You can see them in our Adoption Gallery.  Then see "How to Adopt from GCAS" to start the process of bringing your new pet home!
